Kids reading book launches

30 October 2013

A new children's book based around City striker James Hanson and the Bantams' memorable 2012/2013 campaign has now been made available to the public by a fans group to help get young kids reading.00.The project is being led by the Friends of Bradford City supporters group which will see the book, aimed at a reading level of 6-7 years, available in multiple retail outlets priced at £5.

The book draws on Bradford City’s double Wembley-appearing season as inspiration and aims to help encourage youngsters to read more and inspire them to never give up and reach for their goals.

'The League of Dreams' is based on a young boy - Hanson - who worked in his local Co-op and dreams of becoming a footballer and playing at Wembley.

A City spokesman said: “Bradford City Football Club is thrilled with the work Friends of Bradford City have done to put such a great product together. This Children’s book will allow the historic 2012 / 2013 season to be retold to both our current and next generation of young supporters. It will leave a legacy for years to come to all its readers based on such an inspirational true story.”.

City grabbed the world's attention when they made it through to the Capital One Cup Final despite being in the fourth tier of English football. Although they were defeated in the final, Parkinson's men still managed to finish their season on the ultimate high note by reaching Wembley again and securing promotion into League 1 via the Play-Offs.

"I have been excited by this project since Mick Shackleton (project leader for FoBCFC) first brought it to our attention. I think the idea of children improving their reading and also learning about the history of the club is an absolutely fantastic thing for Bradford City".

Mark Neale, Friends of BCFC Chairman, said "This unique book is an excellent way of not only providing an exciting way of offering a memento of that history making season, but also fulfilling a real need, and offering encouragement for local children to improve their reading skills.

The Community Foundation is a self-funded charity that’s main aim is to promote the improvement of health and well-being of the local community through the medium of football and multi-sports.
