Bradford City AFC is delighted to announce a total of £19,253.86 raised for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation, through the club's involvement in March of the Day.
The challenge, organised by Redwood Events and dedicated to City legend Stephen Darby and former Huddersfield Town forward Marcus Stewart, took place over the weekend of Friday March 22, and has raised over £200,000 counting for the charity, founded by Darby following his diagnosis with motor neurone disease in 2018.
An incredible running total of £201,976.14 for the entire challenge comprises £171,414.47 in donations and a further £30,561.67 in JustGiving Gift Aid, while City's total is made up of £16,019.07 worth of donations, and a further £3,234.79 in Gift Aid.
The weekend began at the University of Bradford Stadium on the Friday morning, with a continuous trek stopping at another 17 football stadia across the north west before ending at Anfield on the evening of Sunday March 24.
A number of club staff participated in the challenge, including members of the men's first team coaching staff, with many tackling 20 miles or more of the overall 175-mile distance, over the course of the weekend.
The club's team, set up by former Bantam Filipe Morais, smashed its initial fundraising target of £10,000 on its way to raising over £16,000 in donations, and with the JustGiving page now closed, the final total has been donated to the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation.
This included proceeds from the premiere of the club's '2013: When History Was Made' feature-length documentary at the Pictureville cinema, Bradford, last July, proceeds from rentals of the same production, after it was made available to stream in December, and proceeds of £270 from the sale of a 'Darby 2' 2023/24 home shirt, signed by each of Darby's former teammates who took on the challenge.
A core team including the likes of former Liverpool and England goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, former Liverpool and Scotland defender Dominic Matteo, brother of Stephen Darby, Kev, and father of Stephen Darby's wife Steph Houghton, Len, was joined by separate teams comprising of former teammates of both Darby and Stewart, from throughout their footballing careers.
This fundraising effort from the club comes just over 12 months on from raising £18,818 for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation through the Claret and Amber Ramble.
